We are happy to share that InterContinental® New York Barclay Hotel (known as The Barclay) announced the appointment of Kristin Hankins as Hotel Manager. In her new position, Hankins will manage property-wide day-to-day operations, implementing programming to enhance the guest experience and strengthen the historic institution’s prominence as a leading hotel in New York City.
Hankins brings more than two decades of experience to The Barclay, most recently serving as the Director of Sales and Marketing at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis where she led the team in producing strong revenue increases during its post-pandemic recovery. She is also an expert in the New York hospitality market, having led robust sales and marketing efforts for four New York properties with Highgate hotels from her area position at the Crowne Plaza Times Square. And prior to that role, as the DOSM of the Omni Berkshire Place. Hankins served as the Vice President of Sales at SIXTY Hotels, building brand awareness and achieving market share growth for five hotels in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, and spent 14 years of her impressive career with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, where she began her tenure as a global sales account director. Ms. Rakowski will be discussing Hotel Stabilization, the recent uptick in cases involving guests who check in and then request a lease, defenses to those actions, and what actions management should take when they receive a request for a lease.

KARA I. SCHECHTER RAKOWSKI is a Co-Chair of Belkin Burden Goldman, LLP’s Administrative Law Department. Ms. Rakowski joined the firm in 1991 and became a Partner of the firm in 1999.
Ms. Rakowski practices administrative law, with concentrations in representing property owners/buyers in rent regulation, development of rent regulated property, Certificates of Non-Harassment/NYC Pilot Program, Single Room Occupancy/Hotel Stabilization, NYC Loft Law and human rights. Ms. Rakowski represents property sellers, buyers and lenders in connection with rent regulatory due diligence and affordable housing issues. She has represented owners in numerous proceedings before the New York State Division of Housing & Community Renewal, New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development, New York City Environmental Control Board, New York City Department of Buildings, New York City Commission on Human Rights, New York State Division of Human Rights, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the New York State Public Service Commission. She has also represented owners in litigation challenging determinations made by these agencies. Ms. Rakowski has conducted numerous anti-discrimination training sessions for clients and their staff in connection with NYC and NYS human rights compliance. She has a broad knowledge of and has advised many owners regarding their compliance with city, state and federal lead-paint regulations and HEFPA.
Ms. Rakowski is a graduate of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. She is a member of the New York Bar and is admitted to practice in the Southern and Eastern District Courts of New York.
Ms. Rakowski is a member of the Advisory Board for CHIP. She has lectured at seminars for CHIP and REBNY, as well as private organizations on issues concerning rent stabilization and rent control, anti-harassment, Anti-discrimination and ADA/Fair Housing compliance, and rent regulatory due diligence, affordable housing, Certificates of No Harassment, and NYC Pilot Program. In addition, she is a contributing columnist for Mann Report Management, and has been quoted in articles in publications such as the NY Times and the Commercial Observer. Ms. Rakowski was named as one of the top 100 women attorneys in NYC in Crain’s 2018 Inaugural List.

Please join us for this FREE two-part training, brought to you by Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking and the Hotel Association of New York City. This is a unique opportunity to learn from experts who specialize in human trafficking prevention. Part I will cover BEST’s Inhospitable to Human Trafficking training where participants will learn what human trafficking is, how human trafficking impacts the hospitality industry, what to do if you come across a potential human trafficking case, and how to prevent human trafficking in your hotel. Part II includes a panel discussion to learn from local human trafficking experts. You will hear about local human trafficking prevention efforts, building relationships with law enforcement officers, and available services for survivors. Participants will receive a certificate of completion for this training.
Learning Objectives
- Understand what human trafficking is
- Learn the indicators of trafficking and how you may see indicators at work
- Learn what to do if you suspect human trafficking
Facilitator – Rebekah Fonden
Rebekah Fonden is a human trafficking consultant using her lived experience to create policy change, conduct research and provide education on human trafficking. She attended the University of Washington receiving a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Business Entrepreneurship. She is currently a student at the Evans School of Public Policy pursuing a Masters in Public Administration. As a member of Wase Forward she helped pass SB 5114 which provided 6 million dollars to provide culturally responsive services to survivors in WA state. She has worked with BEST and The Lantern Project educating the public and private sector on human trafficking and is currently working with the University of Washington on a research study focused on trauma informed survivor interviewing and reporting. She has served on the Seattle Human Rights Commission as the Human Trafficking Chair, volunteered with Rotary and currently sits on the Board for the Organization for Prostitution Survivors.

BEST is a nonprofit organization that has gained national recognition for our success in using the power of business to prevent human trafficking. BEST offers online human trafficking prevention training in a multitude of industries, including the hospitality industry. BEST has trained hospitality employees on human trafficking prevention in all 50 states.

The HANYC Foundation Annual Golf Outing will be held this year on Monday, June 10, 2024 at the Scarsdale Golf Club, Hartsdale, New York. As in the past, prizes year will include complimentary accommodations at luxurious hotels. A prize of $10,000 cash will be awarded to each golfer making a HOLE-IN-ONE on any one of three (3) designated holes on the course!
The HANYC Foundation’s Annual Golf Outing is a major funding vehicle for the Scholarship Awards Program. All proceeds after incurred expenses go directly to the scholarship fund for the benefit of its recipients. The HANYC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity, so the cost would be tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
