HANYC Sustainability Committee 2017 Update

Listed below are some event updates from the HANYC Sustainability Committee for upcoming months this year. Please forward them to your Sustainable or Green Team:

1. Earth Hour (Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 8:30 PM):
On Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 8:30 PM (local time). Earth Hour’s “Lights Off” event to raise awareness for climate change action will be celebrated around the world. 2015, Earth Hour was able to achieve an all-time record with over 7,000 cities in 175 countries turning off their lights in support of climate change action. Help make 2017 a milestone year by promoting Earth Hour. Earth Hour posters, logos, web banners and social media too-kits can be found on the attached document and at www.earthhour.org.

2. Earth Day (Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 12 noon):
The HANYC Sustainability Committee will be an exhibiting participant in the annual Earth Day 2017 at Manhattan’s Union Square on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 12 noon to 7:00 PM. The event is a great way to connect with professionals in the Sustainability Industry and learn more about green lifestyle products. Please click here to see overview of the event. 3. 2017 HANYC Sustainability Awards (Monday, November 13, 2017):
The Hotel Association of New York City will be holding the Fourth Annual HANYC Sustainability Awards on Monday, November 13, 2017 during the HX: The Hotel Experience – Rooms to Restaurants Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. There will be a winner announced in each of the following categories:

A. Large Properties (Greater than 250 Keys):
Social Responsibility Award, Environmental Award and Holistic Sustainability Strategy Award (People, Planet, Profit).

B. Small Properties (250 Keys and Less):
Social Responsibility Award, Environmental Protection Award and Holistic Sustainability Award (People Planet, Profit).

C. All Properties: Feature Awards (Water Conservation, Waste Management, Energy Efficiency):
Applications will be sent out to all HANYC members in April 2017. Please come and join us in celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of our member hotels.

4. NYC Mayor’s Hotel Carbon Challenge
Information can be obtained by going to the website from the Mayor’s Sustainability Office. Please join this worthwhile program which will help our city to be recognized as one of the most sustainable cities in the world and also help our properties save thousands of dollars.

5. Hotel Community Initiatives
HANYC will promote all the community initiatives that its member properties are currently involved in and show them as a resource and best practice on it’s Sustainable Hospitality website. We encourage you to send your community initiatives and their impact (if available) to Craig Ranciato at cranciato@hanyc.org.
