The Times Tribune – Scranton zoners: Airbnb room rentals not OK in residential zone

The Scranton Zoning Board on Wednesday rejected a couple’s appeal to continue renting out rooms at their upscale Green Ridge home through intermediary Airbnb. The board voted 4-0 — with Chairman Shawn Walsh, Carri Newcomb, Alan O’Neill and Bob Gattens all in favor, and Bob Palmitessa absent — to uphold the zoning officer’s cease-and-desist order issued May 18 to homeowners Judith and George Reihner. The Reihners said they likely would appeal the rejection to county court. The dispute pitting neighbor against neighbor began after the Reihners started in March renting out rooms at their Electric Street home via Airbnb, a website and app that matches hosts with renters all over the world. Neighbors complained that a bed-and-breakfast business is not allowed in the R-1A residential zone. They expressed concerns about numerous travelers frequenting the neighborhood….
