North Jersey – Fort Lee council may vote on short-term rentals ban

FORT LEE – After tabling an ordinance that would prohibit short-term home rentals in order to consider an appeal by the website Airbnb for regulation rather than an outright ban, the borough will likely vote to enact its original legislation, possibly with tweaks, within the next 30 to 60 days. The introduced ordinance bars residents from renting out residential units for less than 30 days and fines violators a maximum of $1,250 for each day of an illegal rental. Fort Lee cited noise complaints, sanitation issues, unruly behavior, obscene language, fighting, overcrowding and illegal parking as the driving forces behind its ordinance, blaming short-term rentals for creating a “transient atmosphere” that disturbs quiet residential neighborhoods and poses a threat to safety….
