Mercury News – Menlo Park: City makes move to discourage Airbnb rentals

Menlo Park is discouraging peer-to-peer short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, in some types of housing. The Planning Commission on Monday night weighed a series of amendments to an ordinance that deals with secondary dwelling units, after the state earlier this year amended its laws to streamline regulations and encourage the development of more secondary units. A secondary unit is defined by the city as “a dwelling unit on a residential lot that provides complete independent living facilities for one or more persons, and shall include permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking and sanitation independent of the main dwelling.” Amended state laws allow for secondary units to be attached to the main dwelling and go into effect Jan. 1…
