Another loser in the race was Airbnb, as the Hotel and Motel Trades Council put in a substantial effort for Alcantara and can expect her to be an ally in the Senate, where legislation could break the home-rental company’s business model in New York state. The union represents workers at hotels that compete with Airbnb for tourists, many of whom book home-sharing rentals that are illegal because they are shorter than 30 days and the homeowner is not present.
