The Des Moines Register – Letter to the Editor: In Coralville, neighbors fought Airbnb rental

September 11, 2016
In his Sept. 4 Iowa View, Joel Kurtinitis’ research was inaccurate on the Coralville Airbnb situation [Airbnb, EpiPen: How government suffocates innovation]. The hotel association had nothing to do with the City Council’s actions to deny short-term rentals in an R-1 neighborhood (like mine). Our neighbors united to protest noise (police called several times), crime (car broken into last December), fire (garage last December with fire engines called) due to this “party house.” What was a quiet, close-knit neighborhood is no longer. Mid-week and weekend parties happen in a home advertised to sleep 10 (or 20 or 30, etc.), where the owner is not on premises. We love Coralville and our neighborhood. And who would want to buy my house knowing a party house was two houses away? Not me! — Barbara Staib, Coralville
