NY Post – Activists call on Brooklyn Half organizers to dump Airbnb as sponsor

May 20, 2016
On the eve of the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, a group of pols are calling on the race’s organizer to dump Airbnb.

Scores of protesters will be out in force on Saturday wearing #RunfromAirbnb and #AirbnbBadforNYC T-shirts along the 13-mile course from Prospect Park to Coney Island.

New York Road Runners, which organizes the 27,000-person race, received a letter from more than a dozen elected officials and 23 housing groups calling on NYRR “to end its relationship with this predatory and opportunistic company” and to warn their members “of the perils of renting on Airbnb.”

Airbnb’s three-year sponsorship contract expires in 2017, but that’s not soon enough for the protesters.

The pollsters include state Sen. Liz Krueger and City Council members Helen Rosenthal and Jumaane Williams, while the housing groups represent hot spots for Airbnb rentals like Hell’s Kitchen and Carroll Gardens.

Officials for the race, who work closely with city agencies, did not directly address the criticisms.
