New Orleans Advocate – Short-term rental vote scheduled for Thursday but may be delayed

Leah Bailey’s neighborhood near St. Charles and Washington avenues has been changing in recent years. Blighted properties have been fixed up, but not for their owners or long-term tenants. Instead, Bailey said, about half of the neighborhood houses now play host to tourists renting them for a weekend in a constantly shifting mix. And the number of units being used by visitors creates a sense of anxiety in a market where rents and housing prices already have increased substantially. “I think it makes an impact on just the sense of community in the area,” said Bailey, who works in the food service industry. “You’re not seeing the same people everyday. When you’re coming home from work, you’re not getting to know them and you’re not getting to know what’s going on in the area.”…
