MENLO PARK — A Menlo Park homeowner is accusing Airbnb of not protecting its host members, saying she unknowingly rented out a room in her home to a sex worker. Marzouk said while she feels violated by the guest’s actions, she is more upset with Airbnb over its poor response to her questions about the guest and whether it will cover more than $10,000 worth of water damage. She said she had assumed the company verifies all of its guest clients, but later learned her guest was only verified via a confirmed phone number and email address. Marzouk said she was able to create a fake account on the site in three minutes and receive the same two verifications. She added that Airbnb shows all of its members as verified, but makes it difficult to find out what those verifications are. “The picture doesn’t have to match the name and anyone can get an email address and anyone can get a random phone number,” she said. “This means that if someone goes in your house, you will never be able to find that person again if they steal something. … It’s a very big risk they’re playing with here: people’s homes, people’s lives.”…
