If it had happened once or twice, I might have written it off as sloppy hosting. But to have eight consecutive rejections and non-responses seemed more than a little odd, especially based on my previous experiences with Airbnb. Two years ago, I’d joined up as a new user, sans any profile picture at all, and had used it across Europe with no issues. But some time prior to this Amsterdam trip, I decided to upload a proper picture of myself, like a real, grown-up traveller. I decided on a cheesy shot of myself in Bali, holding a coconut, my hijab tucked under an unflattering but practical giant hat….
