SHANDAKEN >> Fireworks being shot off at 3 a.m. and guns being fired have been added to the list of complains about the short-term home rental business in the town of Shandaken. At a recent meeting of the town Planning Board, residents of the hamlet of Chichester asked for some relief from problems they say exist at a Route 214 home that’s rented out online. Short-term rentals, through websites like Airbnb.com, have become a popular way for people who live in the Catskills and elsewhere to make some extra money and a way for visitors to pay less for lodging than they might at motels and hotels. But complaints have been mounting in Shandaken — which has about 275 online listings for such rentals — about guests who are noisy and fail to respect neighbors’ privacy….
